Asakura Hana (麻倉花) is the protagonist of the Shaman King manga and anime series' sequels, from "The Funbari Onsen Saga" to "Hana's Epoch" and Shaman King Flowers. He is the son of Asakura Yoh and Anna,[2] and is the heir to the main Asakura Family after his father.[3]

For the Flower of Maize, Hana is the General of Team Hao.[4]

Appearance[]

Hana

Hana at 6 years old

Hana has mid-length dirty blond hair that is very similar to his father's hairstyle. The only difference is that Hana's hair is wavy like his mother's. He has amber colored eyes and a light complexion.

When Hana Asakura was younger, he dressed in overalls with no shirt. His hair was much longer and wilder looking.

In his teens, Hana's hair is still long and wild and he dresses very similarly to his father's casual clothes. He wears a high-collared white shirt with rolled-up sleeves and jeans with rolled cuffs. The biggest difference is that he wears a black undershirt. He also wears his father orange headphones, but behind the ears. At times he also wears his school's black jacket over his shirt as well. He is seen carrying a black briefcase as well, which holds the Asakura family's secret treasure, the Futunomitama no Turugi.

After returning from his training in Hell, Hana lets his long hair hang loose.[5]

Personality[]

Hana can be described as a socially awkward teenager. Although not ostracized to the extent that Yoh was, Hana keeps to himself and is typically isolated from his normal peers, being more of a loner who feels he doesn't fit with the rest. Hana carries a lot of pent up anger as a result of his parents disappearance for the majority of his life as he has been under the care of Tamao, who is stern, but cares about him and forbids him from using his shamanic powers. This causes Hana inner turmoil as he struggles to find his place in the world, having no objectives, or drive to his life, while feeling denied. His petty fights against Ichihara Ryuji and his gang, thus serve as an outlet to his anger, allowing himself to run wild, although still retraining himself to not injure them significantly or otherwise kill them.

As he's targeted by other Shamans, Hana becomes greatly confused about this set of circumstances in which he has been put without knowing the full extent of affairs, something that also irritates him deeply as he's dragged into affairs he doesn't fully comprehend. At the same time, he relishes at the opportunity to fight these adversaries, as it allows him to use his powers and puts him closer to his objective of defeating his father, which is Hana's primary motivation in life.

During the many instances in which he has been attacked and nearly lost his life, the Onis within him activate by feeding into his boiling negative emotions, resulting in enormous beasts of highly destructive power, who attack everyone indiscriminately, which are in fact a reflection of the darkness within Hana himself. During this trance, Hana views everyone as an enemy, mocking and ridiculing his foes repeatedly, while trying to assert himself as superior. He has virtually no restraint and activelly tries to kill others with almost no control over himself. Even after coming back to his senses, Hana retains a significant amount of anger, and greatly dislikes being reprimanded for his actions, lack of self control, and overall immaturity.

Hana is shown to be very arrogant as well, either looking down on people, regularly mocking his foes, or feeling he doesn't fit with normal people because he is different. He displayed these traits when mocking Yohane for his attire, thinking he was a chuunibyo, believing that Luca was a secret admirer before she attacked him, or ridiculing Tao Men for his unusual hairdo. Hana also doesn't show much respect to his spirits and is generally unfriendly to everyone the first time. Even is less conflictive situations, Hana can be prone to violence, greeting people with his signature "welcome" kick, which he uses on his father, Usui Horokeu and even on Hao himself. Hana also tends to have some bizarre line of thought at times. When attacked by Luca the first time, he decried her attempt at killing him, reasoning they were on a country of laws and that an attempt at his life would technically be considered criminal, even though a Shamanic battle would be impossible to prove in court.

Despite of his shortcomings, Hana also has a gentler side to himself. When he was younger he defended Alumi from Yoshuke, and after their fight he also attempted to provide first aid to Yohane after beating him. His encounter with Sakutaro does prove to have a rather positive influence on Hana. As Sakutaro is a soldier who has lived a life of combat, he knows fully aware of the futility of fighting, especially with no clear reason or goal in mind. His no nonsense, stern, but wise counsel due to his own life, in which he used to take his carefree life for granted before being engulfed in a senseless cycle of violence, provides Hana with more reintrospection over his own actions, his own anger, and what he wants with his life.

Abilities and Powers[]

According to Amidamaru, Hana has more potential than his father as a shaman, both physically and mentally. According to Ryu, he has the same strength as his mother and he even has a phantom left kick. At the age of 7, he already had the ability to form an Over Soul.[6]

As a spirit, it was shown during the battle against Oume Kaizou that his power as a spirit became rather powerful to easily stop Kaizou's oni, and Alumi Numbirch used him as her temporal guardian ghost. During the battle, Hana performed Amidamaru's technique Shinku Buddagiri due to his experiences as Amidamaru's current shaman.

After learning the Cloud technique, Hana can summon copies of Amidamaru, Sakurai Sakutaro, and Johann Faust VIII.[7]

Weapons[]

  • Futunomitama no Turugi: A red sword-shaped rock that has been owned by the Asakura Family ever since the time of Asakura Hao, it was once owned by a sword god and even though it is only made of rock, it is the perfect medium to create a sword Over Soul.[8]

Spirit[]

See More: Amidamaru | Oni | Sakurai Sakutaro

Hana has inherited his father's Guardian Ghost, Amidamaru. Using the Futunomitama no Turugi, he is able to create an Over Soul, "Oni Kabuto", that has two forms: a defensive one that appears as a demonic helmet and can absorb impacts,[3] and an offensive one that appears as an armguard with a cleaver-like blade.[9]

After dying as an infant, Hana was revived with onis in his body,[10] so when his life is threatened, he enters a trance—called "Setsubun Mode" (節分状態 Setsubun Jōtai)—and begins summoning out the onis, starting with Kooni and building up to a Yami-Oni. During this trance, Hana chants, "Demons out" (鬼は外 Oni wa soto).[11] This ability was given to Hana as a means to deter Team YVS from killing Hana.[12]

After losing Amidamaru, Hana developed his ability to summon the onis at will and shape them into armor-type Over Souls around himself. He can also use furyoku-nullification with the small onis.[13] Although the ability is meant to protect Hana, it runs the risk of killing him, especially when used in a near-death state.[12]

After Hana successfully left the Mini Ashura Hell, Sakurai Sakutaro briefly became Hana's guardian ghost for the fight against Oume Kaizou. After the battle, Hana kept the numerous vengeful spirits of the soldiers that had been locked up in Kaizou's safe.[14]

History[]

Past[]

On August 15, 2000, Hana was born to Asakura Yoh and Anna. As a baby, he and his parents were killed in the Middle East[11] and all three ended up in the Great Spirit. There, Anna used blackmail to force Shaman King Hao to revive them. While doing so, Hao implanted onis into his nephew as a safeguard.[10]

Hana and Alumi in destroyed Patch Village

Hana and Alumi face Yohsuke and the Rapt in the destroyed Patch Village.

Later on, as a child, Hana was present with Alumi Numbirch at the Patch Village amidst its destruction by a young Kamogawa Yohsuke, YVS, and the Rapt. Hana attacked Yohsuke, who merely used an YVS Card to freeze time.[15] However, despite time still being frozen, Hana regained consciousness and killed Yohsuke. Hana then demanded answers out of Yohsuke, but Dong Dehon pointed out that it was impossible since Yohsuke's soul had already moved on. Hana moved to attack Dehon but vomited, and Dehon sympathized with this reaction to killing another person. After introducing himself, Dehon immobilized Hana and retrieved Yohsuke's body, while Shahon erased Hana's memories of the events.[6]

Funbari no Uta[]

Introduced as a 6-year-old, he is under the guardianship of Tamamura Tamao whom he believes is his mother. He works with Umemiya Ryunosuke to search for the Five Elemental Warriors. After meeting with four of the warriors and hearing them talk about the final encounter with Asakura Hao, his father and mother suddenly arrive, with his father saying that everything will work out in the end because that is what they promised him. Hana suddenly attacks his father with a "Welcome Kick". After that, Tamao then scolds Hana for kicking his father in the gut, yet he refuses to apologize.[2]

Flowers[]

At age 13, Hana was called to the cemetery by Ichihara Ryuji and his gang who wished to beat him in order to be recognized as the strongest gang in West Tokyo. Hana, who did not understand their reasoning for fighting, nevertheless takes up their challenge and beats them by using Soul Integration with Amidamaru. When he returns home he is scolded by Tamao for using spirits, and she bans him from using them.

When he returns to the cemetery the next day, he finds Amidamaru's gravestone had been sliced in two and decides to find the person responsible. He is interrupted by a boy from his school, asking for directions. After Hana insults him, the boy reveals that he can actually see Amidamaru and that he himself possesses the spirit of a swordsman, Oboro Daikyoh. He challenges Hana to a fight, which Hana accepts it as it would end his boredom.[3] After asking his name, the boy reveals himself to be Asakura Yohane, but Hana merely ignores and laughs at his addition of gloves and an eyepatch. Hana performs Soul Integration with Amidamaru and attacks Yohane who defends the same way. After Yohane gains the upper hand against Hana and delivers a hard blow, he reveals his Over Soul and his reasons to kill the heir to the Asakura Family. However, after Hana hears that Yohane is aiming to kill his father as well, he uses his own Over Soul and defends against Yohane's attack. He then changes the shape of his Over Soul and strikes Yohane, defeating him and breaking his arm in the process.

Shocked by the result, Hana leaves to bring him first aid.[9] He meets Tamao on his way who he lies to about the fight and later the Hana-Gumi Waitresses at the inn, who almost make him forget about the first aid kit. He later returns with the kit to the cemetery only to find Yohane gone. The same night, he reveals the events of the fight to Ryu who in turn tells him that Tamao left to investigate the boy and his sister.

Later that night, Hana sees a girl across the street, watching him from behind a street lamp and goes to see who she is, thinking that she is his first "secret admirer". She, however, attacks him with two dog spirits and later she reveals herself to be Asakura Luca, the older sister of Yohane. She then forms her Over Soul and mocks Hana's Furyoku level, before attacking him.[16] Hana, however, changes the shape of his Over Soul to better receive the attack and then changes his Over Soul to its offensive form. Luca also changes the shape of her Over Soul, and while Hana is focused on it, he is attacked from behind by Yohane, who manages to impale him through his stomach. Hana is, however, still able to stand and, in panic, Luca not only dissolves his Furyoku with her Over Soul but also combines it with Yohane's to deliver a finishing blow. Hana is saved by the sudden appearance of Alumi Numbirch,[17] and she easily defeats the siblings' Over Soul.

When Hana awakes in the hospital, he recounts the night's events and criticizes Alumi, so in retaliation, she punches him in the stomach. While wandering around the hospital, Hana runs across Ryuji and decides to vent his frustation on the older teenager; however, Ryu accidentally gets in the way. Hana drags Ryu outside, and Ryu passes on the warning about the upcoming Flower of Maize.[18]

After his recovery, he goes to school only to find Yohane and Alumi transferred to his school. Hana and Yohane later on ditch school to go to a new mall that was opened up. Hana is attacked by Alumi when she finds them at the mall only to see Hana eating with Yohane. Hana is then attacked by Ichihara Ryuji and Luca. Hana is knocked out cold due to not having Amidamaru by his side because he was turned to stone due the fact by the hands of Luca.

While knocked out, Hana remembers when he died during that time when he was with his parents as an infant. Hana is brought back to life at the cost of being filled with Onis. Hana wakes up and summons Onis. The Onis summoned by Hana start forming an Oni called the "Dark Oni", and Luca is defeated by the Oni. Yohane is suddenly grabbed by the Oni but is saved when Alumi destroys it.

As Hana felt miserable knowing about this, Hana goes to the cemetery again, only to be attacked by Ibuki Gakko. Hana takes the form of an oni but is defeated by Ibuki Gakko. He gets back up only to be knocked down by Alumi. Alumi is angered due to the fact that Hana using the Onis purposefully when he was only allowed to use the Onis when his life was at stake.

Later on, Hana is attacked by Tao Men. Hana uses the "Dark Oni" but before he could attack the Oni disappears, and Hana finds his uncle Hao next to a tree, along with some cats. Hana throws a punch at his uncle Hao but only to be grabbed. Hana then uses his left leg and kick his uncle Hao in the face. but as Hao then explains that he can see him because he has died due to using the Onis for something else other than using them when his life was in danger. Hana then tells his uncle Hao to bring him back to life. Hao says he will if he can defeat Yoh when he was still at the age of 14.

Hana loses to his father and then finds himself on an island beside a broken airplane. A man pulls out a gun on Hana. Due to Hana thinking it was a mere joke, he is given a scar on his cheek by a bullet fire. Back where Men, Gakko, Yohane, and Alumi are, Alumi explains if he comes back he will be more mature.
