Boris Tepes Dracula (ボリス゠ツェペシュ゠ドラキュラ Borisu Tsepeshu Dorakyura) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. A descendant of Vlad Tepes,[5] Boris is one of Hao's followers.[6]
Appearance[]
Boris is a tall, broad-shouldered man, wearing clothing of Romanian nobles from the Middle Ages, consisting of black pants, a black vest, and a pair of tall black boots while wearing black gloves, with a white t-shirt beneath. He has spiky blonde hair in a triangular shape on each side of his head and two big bangs on each side of his face.
He also carries a rapier, that was used by Blaumro centuries years ago, that Boris would eventually obtain.
Boris wears a large Romanian cloak that can apparently transform into a pair of bat wings with several sharp spikes, to impale his opponents. All of his clothing seemingly has a golden yellow lining on them.
Five years before the Shaman Fight, he wore glasses and had much longer hair fashioned in a ponytail, which Damayaji humorously claimed Boris had copied from him.[7]
Personality[]
Boris seems very proud of his so-called "Vampire" lineage even to the point of completely breaking down when Horohoro suggests that his teammate Damayaji looked more like Dracula than him. However, he later proclaims to his partner's corpse that he was really sorry for what happened, that it is all the boy's fault for saying such things, and that Damayaji would live on in the afterlife.
Abilities and Powers[]
Boris is noted to have excellent swordsmanship during his fight with Ryu.
Spirit[]

Boris's Guardian Ghosts are the spirits of his own ancestors who had transformed into Vampire Bats.[5] He uses blood as the spiritual medium and so he can manipulate blood as he sees fit, such as manipulating the platelets in his blood in order to quickly heal himself.[5] He typically shapes the Over Soul into a cape, with which he can drain blood from others,[8] mask his movements, and fly.[9] He can also shape the blood into spikes and impale other people.[5]
His other Guardian Ghost is Blaumro,[8] a vampire hunter who had originally hunted down Boris's ancestors.[5] However, they captured and tortured him until he no longer knew what was right from wrong, at which point they killed him and enslaved his ghost.[10] Like the Vampire Bats, Blaumro's spiritual medium is blood. Boris emulates being a vampire by biting a target's neck[11] and having Blaumro possess the victim through their blood, taking full control of their body.[12]
History[]
Past[]
Boris was born on May 11, 1971 in Transylvania, Romania.[3] Boris's ancestor, Vlad Tepes was once a hero from Wallachia for repelling the Turkish Ottoman army. However, his strategy cost him more because Vlad impaled 20,000 Turkish and place them where the Turkish Ottoman army would see them. This grotesque strategy nicknamed Vlad as a "vampire" and his family was persecuted throughout the centuries. When Asakura Hao was a Patch member, he appeared and offered Boris's family shamanic powers to become "real" vampires in order to get their revenge.[5]
Coming to Tokyo[]
Boris and the other qualifying competitors attend the opening ceremony at Mimata Hall.[13]
Travel Through America[]
A month later, at Yokocha Base, Boris and Hao's other followers interrupt Hao, who is playing around with Yoh and friends, so that they will not miss the Patch Jumbo that will take them to America. Hao and his followers sit together on the plane. All of the shamans are tasked with locating and reaching the Patch Village within three months. While still tens of thousands of feet in the air, the jumbo jet is revealed to be an Over Soul shortly before it is dematerialized, dropping all of its passengers. Hao and his allies ride on the back of the Spirit of Fire and safely descend to the ground.[14]
Boris and his team run into Yoh and company in Mesa Verdede. They remark how much Yoh looks like Hao. Boris bites Lyserg's neck and cuts Ryu's hair.[11] Boris introduces himself and Blaumro, his Guardian Ghost, and claims to be a vampire. Horohoro says that Yamada Kouji looks more like a vampire than Boris. Not handling the comment well, Boris impales his own teammate. Turbine tells Boris to take it easy and that Kouji should not have been killed so easily. Boris proceeds to use his bat wings to drain his teammate of his blood effectively turning his body into dust while he cries.
As Boris attacks Yoh and company, Ryu punches Boris in the face and reverts back to his "Wooden Sword" Ryu personality.[8] Ryu Over Souls and launches an attack against Boris cutting him open. Boris comes from behind healed from the injuries, but Ryu uses Tokageroh's snake hair to restrain and crush Boris's wings. Boris's blood turns into a pair of vampire bats, which swarm around Ryu.[9] As Boris uses his blood bats to drain Ryu's blood while Tokageroh runs off. Turbine and the rest of Hao's followers leave knowing they cannot control Boris anymore. Boris explains some of his past history and Ryu gets back up saying that he would finish this. Ryu comments that he knows what Boris is and knows the feeling of loneliness and rejection.
Tokageroh reveals that Boris's Over Soul is made of blood.[12] Boris has Blaumro force Lyserg to hold You down meanwhile as Boris drains the blood from everyone in the area (except Yoh and company) to create blood spikes. The bats were ready to drop the spikes and Lyserg is forced to hold Harusame to his own neck.[5] As Boris releases his spikes and the gang stops them. Boris orders Blaumro to kill Yoh but his guardian ghost was already out in the open back to his original personality.[10]
Ryu uses Ame no Mura Kumo to defeat Boris, who lands on top of the nearby mesa.[15] When Yoh climbs up to check on him, Marco Lasso of the X-Laws fires his archangel at Boris. Michael impales Boris on its sword and then destroys his body with its holy light.[16]
Invading the Plants[]
Boris and Kouji board the train of souls within the Great Spirit and ride it up to the highest commune, where the Five Elemental Warriors are fighting the new Shaman King, Hao.[17]
Anime/Manga Difference[]
In the 2001 anime series, Boris was not the first member of Hao's followers to be killed by the X-Laws with Ashil taking the role instead. In addition, his fate was also altered were instead of being killed by Marco's Archangel Michael, it was light impaling him instead.
In the 4Kids version of the 2001 anime series, he was given a deep Eastern European accent.
Trivia[]
- Țepeș is Romanian for "impaler".
- Boris's favorite food is cordon bleu.[18]
