Brocken Meyer (ブロッケン・マイヤー Burokken Maiyā, 4Kids: "Blocken") is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. The first of Hao's followers, Brocken is Asakura Hao's foster father. Brocken is usually seen sitting on Bill Burton's shoulder.
Appearance[]
Having a growth disease, Brocken's body is very short and quite frail, not being much larger than a grown child. After encountering an infant Hao, he had his limbs burnt off, and he had to use building blocks and the rat spirits to create a Lego minifigure like Over Soul to assist his disability. He was very short, had spiky light-colored hair, he also had rat-like buck teeth and he was also seen with a white tank top underneath his Over Soul.
When not fighting, he is mostly seen concealing his Lego minifigure body with a red cloak, with a blue scarf, while wearing yellow mittens with a red star on them.
Personality[]
Believing the house he was living in before he had met Hao to almost be like a prison because of his growth disease, Brocken feels grateful for Hao and claims that Hao had saved him. He seems to be very friendly, happily introducing himself to a newly recruited Bill Burton, and claiming that under Hao, they all could live as free as they wanted.[4] Being extremely loyal to Hao, he does not take well to being betrayed, as he was quite to angered and quite mortified at Peyote's actions at the beach.
Abilities and Powers[]
Brocken has a high Furyoku level that, according to Peyote Diaz, is because he is living in a constant near-death situation quite similar to that of Iron Maiden Jeanne.
Spirit[]
- See More: Blocks
Brocken's Guardian Ghosts are a pack of rat spirits, that inhabit the blocks that he uses as an Over Soul on his body.
History[]
Past[]
Brocken was born on August 30, 1959 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He suffered from a genetic disorder that effected his body's growth ever since childhood, and eventually moved to Japan for treatment of his disorder. He was also born with shamanic abilities and used the spirits of rats to build an information network in a time before the internet. Through this network, he became a successful financial trader and amassed great wealth.[5] In 1985, when Brocken was 26 years old and living in Hiroshima, the infant Asakura Hao and the Spirit of Fire found Brocken,[6] and he became Hao's foster father and the first of Hao's followers. Although the power from the Chō-Senjiryakketsu enabled him to overcome his illness, Brocken chose to have his limbs burned off in order to further increase his furyoku.[5] Brocken then replaced his limbs with Lego-like prosthetics and controlled them with an Over Soul made from incorporating his rat spirits into the Hao bricks.[4]
In 1995, when Bill Burton was introduced into the group, he freaks out when he sees Brocken, thinking he is a talking toy. Brocken introduced himself and shows Bill his true appearance and explains the main reason for his odd appearance. He then praises Hao, saying that if it were not for being in a near-death state he would not have had awakened his shamanic powers. Bill wonders that if he had not met Hao he would have had a normal life, but Brocken believed that because of his growth disease, Hao had rescued him from life, saying that being together with Hao they were free as they wanted to be. When BOØWZ started to pick a fight with Bill, Brocken explains to the monks about Bill's guardian ghosts and that they should not want to mess with him.[4]
Shaman Fight in Tokyo[]
Not much is known about his performance during the preliminary round, but Brocken did win two matches and advanced to the main competition. Brocken and the other qualifying competitors attended the opening ceremony at Mimata Hall.[7]
Traveling through America[]
A month later, at Yokocha Base, Brocken and Hao's other followers interrupted Hao, who was playing around with Asakura Yoh and friends, so that they would not miss the Patch Jumbo that would take them to America. Hao and his followers sat together on the plane. All of the shamans were tasked with locating and reaching the Patch Village within three months. While still tens of thousands of feet in the air, the jumbo jet was revealed to be an Over Soul shortly before it was dematerialized, dropping all of its passengers. Hao and his allies rode on the back of the Spirit of Fire and safely descended to the ground.[8]
Weeks later, Hao's surviving followers eventually reunited at the Patch Village.[9]
Shaman Fight Second Round[]
Months later, the competing shamans were transported to the island Tokyo.[10] Brocken sat in the audience with Hao and his companions and watched the matches of the tournament.[11][12]
After receiving a report from Patch Officiants Magna and Nichrom,[13] Hao and his followers headed out to gather the souls of their competitors, intending to feed them to the Spirit of Fire. Brocken and Bill Burton attacked the Icemen and prevented them from leaving the island. Although Usui Horokeu came to the Icemen's defense, Bill still overpowered and defeated all four shamans.[14]
Brocken panicked when Usui Lycan defeated Bill with a single blow despite Lycan having a lower furyoku amount. Brocken decided to kill the Icemen himself, but Horohoro stood up to stop him. Brocken tried to shake Horohoro's mental state by revealing his Over Soul and gloating about his own furyoku amount; however, Horohoro remained resolute and prepared to utilize the Icemen's Guardian Ghosts alongside Kororo, which instead shook Brocken's mindset. By switching between Over Souls, Horohoro managed to break apart Brocken's O.S. "Die Saurus", funnel Brocken into the ocean, and then freeze Brocken and his O.S. "Die Tank" into an iceberg. Horohoro threatened to smash Brocken with Deht's axe but instead chose mercy, towing the iceberg ashore and creating an airhole with Deht's chains.[15] While still trapped in the ice, Brocken watched as Lyserg Diethel arrived with Zelel and cut down Bill before Bill could attack Horohoro. Lyserg then carried Horohoro and the Icemen away. Brocken was later found by Mohamed Tabarsi, Hang Zang-Ching, and Peyote Diaz, and the three men headed out to seek revenge while Brocken carried back Bill's body.[16]
A couple days later, at their base, Hao commenced the Star Festival.[17]
After Brocken was the only sole survivor of the disaster on the beach where Peyote tried to kill all of Hao's followers, he was rescued by the Asakura Family and his condition stabilized. He was kept captive in hopes of getting some information out of him.
Invading the Plants[]
After Hao became the Shaman King, Brocken, along with Zang-Ching and Bill, boarded the train of souls inside the Great Spirit and rode it up to the highest commune.[18]
Day After Maize[]
After being revived, Brocken returned to his normal life but was unmotivated due to burnout. Several years later, when Brocken was struggling, Ren hired him, along with Bill and Zang-Ching, to work for the Leidi Group, a large electronics manufacturing company. The three quickly rose through the company's ranks and eventually became the personal bodyguards for Tao Ren, Jun, and Men.[19]
Red Crimson[]
One day, Brocken, Bill, and Zang-Ching were out escorting Men when Kamogawa Yohsuke, Black Maiden, and Dong Yonhon visited the family's apartment and killed Jeanne.[20] Later, after Jeanne's body was discovered, Brocken, Bill, and Zang-Ching listened in as Ren comforted Men. Afterwards, Ren told them to return to work, and they questioned how the Tao Family and Jun would react.[21]
Brocken, Bill, Zang-Ching, and Horokeu accompanied Jun on her mission to attack Director Ten, a subordinate of the Dong Family.[22]
Anime/Manga Difference[]
In the 2001 anime series, like most of Hao's other followers, Brocken's role is far less important, including no mention of being Hao's first follower or being his adoptive father. His anime appearance is also slightly different: He wears a yellow cloak (instead of a red coat) and a blue scarf with a red Hao block attached to it, and his Lego minifigure body is multicolored as red, yellow, and blue instead of solely colored yellow.
In addition, Brocken has no speaking role in the 2001 anime series, only making an odd electronic robotic noise in response to Hang Zang-Ching, on one occasion. During the battle at the Gate of Babylon, he clashes with Cebin Mendel. He arrives in the final battle much later than his other comrades, and subsequently fights with Horohoro before eventually being defeated alongside Luchist Lasso, Turbine, and Zang-Ching by Tao Ren.
Trivia[]
- His block form is heavily similar to a real-life popular line of construction toys, Lego minifigures. When he first met Bill Burton, he was shocked by his appearance, referring to him as a talking toy.
- In the character popularity polls, Brocken ranked #52 (along with others) in the second.
