Datura (ダチュラ Dachura) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. She participated in the Shaman Fight of AD 2000 as a member of Team "Haiti 800", with her friend Minder and their teacher Chicory.[1]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
Datura is kind but strong-willed. After seeing the disparity of wealth in her own country, she wished to become Shaman King so she could eliminate this disparity from the world.[1]
Abilities and Powers[]
Datura awoke her shamanic abilities while learning voodoo from Chicory.[1]
Spirits[]
Their team's Guardian Ghosts are Zombie Soldiers, and they use Over Souls to animate the corpses.[2] These soldiers' spirits sympathized with Datura's ideals and chose to fight for Haiti even after death.[3]
History[]
Past[]
Datura was born in Haiti with mixed African and Caucasian parentage. She was raised in relative wealth since her father ran a large farm and transportation company. As such, she received greater freedom and education than the children who worked on her father's farm. She was taught voodoo by one of the farm workers, Chicory, and this training awoke her shamanic abilities.[1] Her childhood friend, Minder, also became a student of Chicory after a farming accident awoke his shamanic abilities.[4]
Shaman Fight in Tokyo[]
Not much is known about her performance during the preliminary round, but Datura did win two matches and advanced to the main competition. Datura and the other qualifying competitors attended the opening ceremony at Mimata Hall.[5]
Traveling through America[]
A month later, Datura and the other competitors gathered at Yokocha Base and were flown to America in the Patch Jumbo. The shamans were tasked with locating and reaching the Patch Village within three months. While still tens of thousands of feet in the air, the jumbo jet was revealed to be an Over Soul shortly before it was dematerialized, dropping all of its passengers.[6]
Datura, Minder, and Chicory successfully reached the village and formed Team "Haiti 800" for the tournament.
Shaman Fight Second Round[]
Months later, the competing shamans were transported to the island Tokyo. For their first match, Team "Haiti 800" was pitted against Gandhara's Team "Nyorai".[7] During the match, Sati Saigan easily pacified the Zombie Soldiers, turning the corpses to dust and sending their spirits to the afterlife.[2] Datura and Minder were saddened by the defeat, and Chicory comforted his students.[8]
Anime/Manga Difference[]
Like the rest of her team, she does not appear in the 2001 anime series.
Trivia[]
- She is named after the genus Datura, whose plants have been used in traditional medicines.
