Shaman King is the second anime adaptation of Hiroyuki Takei's manga of same name.[1] The anime is directed by Jouji Furuta at animation studio Bridge Inc. The series aired on April 1, 2021 in Japan. Netflix acquired the series and debuted it on the streaming service on August 9, 2021.[2]

The series was announced with a video released on June 11, 2020, and an update to the official website. It will adapt the 35 volumes of the manga's complete edition,[3] and will provide the canonical ending of the manga, that was originally released after the first adaptation of Shaman King from 2001 had already finished.[1]

Unlike the original dub, the English dub of this version uses the Japanese names of the characters (Manta instead of Morty and so forth).

Plot[]

Asakura Yoh is a shaman, a medium between the worlds of the living and the dead. Yoh seeks to become the Shaman King, the one who is able to contact the Great Spirit, and will gain the ability to reshape the world in any way they wish, and for this purpose, he must win the Shaman Fight, a battle held once every 500 years between competing shamans. Kyōyama Anna, Yoh's fiancée, soon enters the scene and prescribes a brutal training regimen to prepare him for the tournament.

Development[]

Masao Maruyama, former president of MAPPA and Madhouse, had manifested his interest into rebooting Shaman King on 2015 at Otakon.[4] On February 2017, while answering a fan's question, Takei had declared on Twitter that he had received an offer to reboot Shaman King, but he had declined for not being able to keep the original voice actors and soundtrack.[5]

On June 11, 2020, the official channel of KING AMUSEMENT CREATIVE released a promotional video for a readaptation of Shaman King to be released in April 2021.
