Gumakura Isao (ぐまくらいさお) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. He was a retired army general and the founder and owner of Gumakura Souvenir (土産のぐまくら Miyage no Gumakura), a shop near Mt. Osore.[1]

Appearance[]

Isao was an old, bald man with a long mustache and goatee. He wore a simple, tan shirt and pants, a brown haramaki, a pair of square-frame glasses, and an Imperial Japanese Army Officer's cap.

Personality[]

Isao was very protective of his store and was not afraid to fight.[1] He was also an honor-bound man, as he felt indebted to Yoh who had saved his life from a threat that he could not see.[2]

Abilities and Powers[]

As a former army general, Isao carried a saber, which he used to defend his shop from vandals.[1]

History[]

After retiring from the military, Isao set up a souvenir shop in Aomori, near Mt. Osore.

In 1995, a Naka-Oni chased after Asakura Yoh and smashed the front windows and doors of Gumakura Souvenir. Hearing the noise, Isao grabbed his saber and came out of the back of the store. Unable to see the oni, Isao assumed Yoh broke the storefront and attacked him. At the same time, the Naka-Oni was attacking so Yoh tackled Isao to the floor, saving both of them and knocking out Isao's dentures. After seeing the other windows break without Yoh touching them, Isao began to believe that it was the fault of an evil spirit. Yoh picked up Isao's saber and confronted the oni, but Kyōyama Anna, who had summoned the oni, managed to disperse it before it did anymore damage.[1]

On New Year's Eve, Isao and his grandson attended the festival. They ran into Yoh, and seeing the boy was clearly in distress, Isao offered to help Yoh as repayment for saving his life.[2] In his snowcat, he drove Yoh up Mt. Osore through the snowstorm. During the trip, he was confused by Yoh talking to and shouting at Matamune because he could not see or hear the cat spirit.[3] After Yoh and Anna defeated the Oh-Oni, Isao picked up the two kids in his snowcat.[4]

Not long after, Isao became ill and had to close down his shop. He eventually died four years later.[5]

Anime/Manga Difference[]

Isao does not appear in the 2001 anime series because it did not adapt the Osorezan Revoir story.
