John Denbat (ジョン・デンバット John Denbatto) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. A former member of the British SAS,[2] he enlisted in the X-Laws and competes in the Shaman Fight as part of Team "X-II".
Appearance[]
John is an average-sized slim man that has long blonde spiky hair. He wears a slightly updated X-laws uniform with a tall slim shoulder guard, with a black sash around his waist and knee-length black boots.
His street clothes are an open red dress shirt, a necktie with the English flag on it, a cross necklace, dark blue and white dress pants, and brown leather shoes.[3]
When preparing his final attack on Asakura Hao, he wore his tactical military suit, complete with a pair of pockets strapped to each of his legs and a pair of black military boots and glows. He also wears a tactical vest, a field bottle, and straps above the left chest with a knife attached to it. He carries his rifle in a sheath-like strap placed on the left side of his belt.
Personality[]
Like many of the X-Laws, John is an extremist believer that the end justifies the means. He is very similar to Marco, in that he is quick to anger and loses his cool, such as when Luchist Lasso showed up at the X-Laws Cargo Ship, where he blamed him for the death Meene Montgomery. However, after learning that Marco had lied about Jeanne's origins, John lost his faith in Marco as a captain.[4]
Abilities and Powers[]
Spirit[]
- See More: Raphael
John's Guardian Ghost is a car-based tsukumogami empowered by a piece of the archangel Raphael.[5] Like all other archangels, Raphael has the ability to shatter souls.[6] Sometime after the Shaman Fight, Raphael wields a sword resembling Michael's.[7]
History[]
Past[]
John was born on September 4, 1975 in Oxford, England.[1] As an adult, he served in the British Special Air Service.[2] While investigating the mysterious death of a senior SAS member during an anti-terrorism mission, John encountered the X-Laws and learned about Hao and shamans. Seeking vengeance for the fallen SAS member, John decided to join the X-Laws. As part of the special training, John underwent torture by Shamash in order to awaken his shamanic abilities.[8] He was then given the archangel Raphael as his Guardian Ghost.[9]
Travel Through America[]
After arriving at Mesa Verdede, John and the other X-Laws watched as Marco killed Boris Tepes Dracula with his Archangel, Michael.[10] As the X-Laws and Asakura Yoh's group traveled deeper into the mesa, Marco introduced the members of his group. When Bill Burton ambushed the X-Laws, they defeated him by overwhelming him with their Archangels; however, Yoh refused to let them kill Bill.[11] After Marco briefly clashed with Yoh, the X-Laws respected Yoh's bravery and so left Bill alive as they continued ahead to the Patch Village.[12]
After reaching the Village, Lyserg Diethel met up with the X-Laws, and Marco offered to let him join them.[13]
Shaman Fights Second Round[]
One night, Marco and the remaining X-Laws were visited by Yoh, who wanted Marco's permission to once again participate in the Shaman Fight. However, instead of arguing with them Yoh quickly revealed his resolve to fight with them.[14] In turn Marco was quick to decide that Yoh was allied with Hao and therefore his soul had to be destroyed, and together with Team "X-II" attacked Yoh, but Yoh easily dodged all of their attacks as he had used Soul Integration with Amidamaru. After Yoh switched to his O.S. "Spirit of Sword", the Archangels managed to pin down Yoh, but before Michael could deal the final blow, Yoh sliced through the Archangel with a second Over Soul, revealing that this first was a trick by Imari and Shigaraki. John, Larch, and Porf tried to stop Yoh's advance but he used Shamanic Oracle to slip between their attacks. When Luchist Lasso interrupted Marco and Yoh's fight, John aimed to shoot Luchist, but Marco stopped him, warning him about Luchist's power. However, after Luchist admitted that Hao had sent him to aid Yoh, John lashed out with Raphael. Luchist's Lucifer destroyed Raphael in an instant, and the Over Soul's total and violent destruction caused John to lose consciousness.[15]
After the failed attack by Luchist Lasso on their cargo ship, and the revelation that Iron Maiden Jeanne was not a holy person, John alongside Porf Griffith and Larch Dirac decided that Marco Lasso could no longer be trusted and that it was time to face off with Asakura Hao one last time.[16]
The mission was planned so that Larch and John would take guard posts while Porf would target Hao from a small distance, with his sniper rifle. After a small chat about whether or not they should go through with the mission, Porf reported that he was in position, but when he had Hao's head in his target range, he suddenly lost focus due to seeing Hao crying all of a sudden. As Team X-II's attempt to kill Hao fails, Porf is heard being killed by Hao over the radio, which in turn made Larch flee in fear. Larch was however caught by Hao and his whole body burned to a crisp.
John curses out on Hao for killing his comrades when he realizes that Porf and Larch were dead. Hao then questions why John chooses to stand against him instead of stopping if he was aware that he, Prof and Larch would likely die in the same process. Aware of the possible consequences, John reveals that he had prepared a test satellite in space wired to his Archangel with a laser known as XDI. Using himself as a target knowing it would also hit Hao, John fires the laser from orbit at Hao, but the blast is deflected around them due to Hao's armor Over Soul, "Spirit of Fire: Black Fowl". Angered by Porf seeing his moment of weakness, Hao chose to incinerate John completely, body and soul.[17]
Invading the Plants[]
When Hao created a Black Hole within the Great Spirit, the spirits of the X-Laws appeared in their "Supercars" to protect the train of souls.[18] After the battle, Hao resurrected everyone who had died during the Shaman Fight.
Day After Maize[]
After being revived, John and the rest of the X-Laws (except Marco) were inspired to reunite at Mont Saint-Michel. They then reformed into a charity organization, with large support from the Leidi Group.[19] The new X-Laws visited war-torn places around the world, bringing aid and exorcising evil spirits.[20]
In 2008, they all gathered together and celebrated the wedding of Jeanne and Tao Ren.[21]
Marcos[]
After learning about Jeanne's death, John, Meene, and Hans volunteered to stand vigil at her grave, without even being asked.[7]
Anime/Manga Difference[]
Following the events of the Gate of Babylon, John is killed by Turbine's Beam attack, which not only made several holes in Raphael but also pierced through John's chest.[22]
Trivia[]
- His hobby is playing darts.[23]
- John's birth year was originally listed as 1984 in the Shaman King Official Fan Book: Mankin Book but was amended to 1975 in the Shaman King Kazenban Final Official Guide Book Mentalite. This change was later supported by his age listed in the Day After Maize profiles.
