The episodes of the Shaman King anime series are based on the manga of the same name written by Hiroyuki Takei. They were directed by Seiji Mizushima (水島 精二, Mizushima Seiji) and produced by Xebec.

The episodes were aired between July 4, 2001, and September 25, 2002, on TV Tokyo in Japan and spanned sixty-four episodes. 4Kids Entertainment obtained the rights to the Shaman King anime in North America; it premiered on 4Kids network Foxbox on August 30, 2003. The final episode aired on September 3, 2005.

Five musical themes were used throughout the series. The opening themes are "Over Soul" from episodes one to thirty-four, and "Northern lights" onwards towards the end; both were sung by Megumi Hayashibara. The three ending themes are "Trust you" from episodes one to thirty-four, "Omokage" from episodes thirty five to sixty-three, and "Tamashii Kasanete" for the final episode. "Trust You" and "Omokage" was performed by Megumi Hayashibara while "Tamashii Kasanete" was sung by Yūko Satō. Several CDs that contain the theme music and other tracks have been released by King records.

Yoh wants the spirit of Amidamaru, the devil samurai, to join him as his Guardian Ghost. Amidamaru is waiting for someone, though, and cannot leave the cemetery. Yoh tries to find out who the samurai is waiting for, while "Wooden Sword" Ryu searches for revenge.

Yoh's fiancée, Kyōyama Anna, arrives into town to coach Yoh for the Shaman Fight. Her methods seem abusive, but the training comes in handy when Yoh is attacked by Jiang Shi commanded by the Tao Family.

After breaking Amidamaru's sword, Ryu becomes even more depressed, and Yoh looks for a solution. Meanwhile, the star that signals the beginning of the Shaman Fight descends from the sky.

To enter the Shaman Fight, Yoh must hit, at least once, the Patch Priest Silva. The task is not easy, though, because Silva uses a different technique to fight with his Guardian Ghosts, known as an Over Soul.

Yoh's first opponent in the Shaman Fight is Horohoro, and things get awkward between them both when Horohoro's younger sister, Usui Pirica, and Anna seem to forget that "opponent" and "friend" are not antonyms.

Yoh's second opponent is an eerie doctor called Johann Faust VIII, whom Silva believes to be an extremely dangerous man. This is proven to be true when the doctor captures Manta.

The fight against Faust continues. As the doctor harasses Manta, Yoh loses his calm and ends up in a disadvantageous position. Danger only increases when Faust summons the spirit of his late wife, Eliza Faust.

Trying to protect Manta, Yoh pushes his friend away and returns to his grandfather's house to train for the second round. Distraught, Manta embarks in a journey with Ryu to find his friend. On their way, they are followed by Elly and Milly, two shamans trying to eliminate opponents before the Shaman Fight.

To improve his Shaman abilities, Yoh entered the Yomi Hole, a place where there is no light and sound. Manta, Anna, Amidamaru and a girl called Tamamura Tamao wait for him to come back. Meanwhile, Elly and Milly reach their location.

The final qualifying match is tomorrow, and if Yoh loses, his path to becoming Shaman King will be closed. His match is against Ren at the Mata Cemetery. Yoh and Ren both pour their power into their Over Souls.

Yoh and Ren clash evenly, repeatedly using Over Souls. Ren calls upon his specially trained shaman horse to create a more powerful Over Soul with Bason. Yoh takes Ren head on, and the two clash for the final time.

After Ren is defeated by his father, Tao En. Bason asks Yoh to save Ren, but Anna will not let Yoh skip out on training. When Yoh, Manta, and Horohoro sneak out of the house, they are attacked by Zen and Ryo.

When Yoh, Manta, Horohoro, and Ryu arrive at the Tao Family's castle, they are beset upon by the Gohukuseitai, the strongest Jiang Shi unit. Horohoro and Ryu stay behind to fight the five Jiang Shi, while Yoh and Manta continue on to find Ren.
23	Wrath of the Dao Shi Maiden 蘇る娘娘道士 Yomigaeru Nyan Nyan Dōshi	December 5, 2001	April 10, 2004
The last of the Gohukuseitai, Ichi-Johtoh is revealed to be the modified corpse of Shamon, Pyron's late master, and is capable of using Pyron's Dǎodàndào techniques. Before Ichi-Johtoh can finish off Yoh, Jun and Pyron step in and defeat the Jiang Shi. The group then continues on to face En.

En appears to be unstoppable; however, Yoh and and his friends refuse to give up. When this resolve shakes En, Yoh and Ren figure out the secret behind En's power.

The second round of Shaman Fight preliminaries will be held in America. Manta is sad that he will have to say goodbye to Yoh and the others for a while. Yoh and Anna go on a rare evening walk together.

After their plane crashes in America, Yoh and his friends have to trek across the desert. Rival competitors in the Shaman Fight, Sharona and her friends follow Yoh and continue targeting him and his friends.
