Oume Kaizou (青梅 戒造 Oume Kaizō) is a fictional character and antagonist in the Shaman King The Super Star manga series.
Appearance[]
Kaizou is an elderly man with a wide build. He is balding with only a small patch of hair on top of his head and he has a scraggly mustache growing all the way to his ears. In his youth, he had a full set of hair and was clean-shaven.
He is commonly seen wearing a white smoking jacket with a white shirt and a black bow-tie.
Personality[]
Abilities and Powers[]
Kaizou's shamanic abilities were awakened by reading the "file" provided by Luke Lasso, which also corrupted his morals. His talent as a shaman is extraordinary, outmatching anybody Luke had ever seen. Kaizou instantly created a large Over Soul without any materials and successfully countered and blocked Lucifer's attack.[2] As Kamogawa Yohsuke commented, Kaizou's spiritual and will power grew even further by becoming old.[3]
According to Alumi Numbirch, Kaizou appears well adjusted to fighting, and during their fight, he showed a complex planned offense and defense, using military strategies.[4] His will power is also strong to keep hiding the confidential materials for over 70 years, a barrier which even Alumi could not see through.[1]
Spirit[]
Kaizou's spirit is the battleship-shaped oni created by himself and modeled after the battleship Yamato. While fighting, Kaizou creates an Over Soul around himself in the shape of the Yamato, but with the rear of the ship split in four to act as arms and legs.[5] It carries a squadron of Zero-model aquatic scout planes, as well as a multitude of large-caliber cannons on turrets.[4] The anchors can be launched from the bow with enough force to punch through other Over Souls,[6] and their chains can be used to wrap up a target.[4]
When Kaizou's lifeforce was forcefully converted into furyoku, the resulting Over Soul became a full-scale replica of the Yamato, with Kaizou in full military dress and operating the ship from the cockpit.[7] After witnessing Hana's convertible Over Soul, Kaizou transformed his own, merging his human appearance with the battleship; however, it was destroyed before demonstrating its fighting capabilities.[8]
- Attacks
- Propeller Blast (スク竜巻 Sukuryūkan): Kaizou aims the ship's propellers at a target and spins them, creating a tornado that pushes away the target. If spun in reverse, the propellers will pull in and chop up the target.[9]
- Yama Cannon Assault (邪馬大砲 Yamadaihō): Kaizou aims the ship's cannons and planes at a target and fires them all at once.[9]
History[]
Past[]
Kaizou grew up in Satoya-mura and was friends with Sakurai Sakutaro. During World War II, Kaizou was a ship mechanic for the Japanese Imperial Navy and worked on the battleship Yamato.[5]
One night, Sakutaro snuck aboard the Yamato and revealed to Kaizou that the battleship was going to be sent on a suicide mission with a devastating new bomb. Kaizou refused to believe Sakutaro's claims based on a confidential file from their enemy, so Sakutaro forced Kaizou onto a plane and flew them to meet Luke Lasso on the Northern Lights off the coast of Peleliu Island. At Luke's insistence, Kaizou read the file, which shook him to his core[10] and awoke his shamanic abilities.
The next day, Kaizou told Luke that he had accepted what the document said, so Luke informed him of their plan to infiltrate the Yamato and asked Kaizou to draw up a blueprint of the battleship. Kaizou agreed to do so but questioned what the spirit was behind Luke. When Lucifer attacked, Kaizou created a battleship-like oni around himself to block the attack. Overcome with greed, Kaizou decided to kill anyone else who knew about the file. Impressed by Kaizou's intelligence, Luke brought out his Over Soul in order to test Kaizou.[2] Quickly comprehending how these new powers worked, Kaizou tested his strength by firing a blast, which Lucifer easily deflected. Knowing that Luke would be distracted by protecting the crew, Kaizou instead targeted the ship, breaking the mast and breaching the hull. As Luke prepared to shoot him, Kaizou maneuvered himself behind Sakutaro and Anderson and then broke off the fore of the ship, forcing Luke to choose between shooting him and saving Sakutaro and Anderson. When Luke chose to save his allies, Kaizou shot him, destroying the Over Soul's cockpit and killing Luke.[11]
Afterwards, Kaizou became a warmonger and sold information on the Japanese to the Americans. A month later, Kaizou orchestrated an attack on Peleliu, hoping to kill Sakurai and Anderson. During the attack, Anderson appeared on the ship and talked with Kaizou, while Sakutaro flew his Zero fighter plane and targeted the ship that Kaizou was on. When the ship's bridge was destroyed, Kaizou tried to bring out his Over Soul but was unable to, which Anderson explained was because of Kaizou's fear. Instead, Kaizou pulled out Sakutaro's pistol and aimed at Anderson, only for Sakutaro to fly over the deck for a final confrontation.[12] Kaizou fired the pistol,[13] striking Sakutaro in the forehead and killing him. The ghosts of Sakutaro and Anderson then brought to Kaizou's attention the other ghosts created from this confrontation before moving on to the afterlife and entrusting Kaizou to take down their true enemies, as well as to look after Chiharu.[8]
After the war, Kaizou returned to Japan[1] and locked the file, Sakutaro's pistol, and the horde of vengeful spirits in a safe.[14] He then set up a factory and hired a lot of soldiers who had worked maintenance during the war. He also leveraged his secret knowledge against the financial and political sectors in order to bypass postwar regulations, growing the factory into the immensely successful "Oume Heavy Industries Group".[1] During this time, he also employed Chiharu as his maid.[13] The factory was eventually designated a cultural heritage site.[15]
Flowers[]
One day, Kaizou was visited by Alumi Numbirch and agreed to see her since he was thought she was foreigner coming for an interview. However, his amusement turned to outrage when she drove her motorcycle through the house, as well as pried for information about Sakurai and asked to take the safe. He had Misaki call the police and forced Alumi out his house. Before she left, Alumi warned Kaizou against attempting to run away with the safe.[15] Kaizou sent three men to intimidate Alumi, but she easily defeated them.[16] When the men reported their failure, Kaizou cancelled his evening plans and continued to fume. In his anger, he drew out his oni[1] and killed the men, later dumping their bodies elsewhere.[17] Afterward, Kaizou bought a model of the battleship Yamato and placed it atop the safe.
Investigating the deaths of the three men, Hebishima Yumeji visited Kaizou and discussed the recent events with him, including Alumi's visit. When Yumeji drew attention to the model ship, Kaizou listed off the mistakes the model had made in recreating the battleship. Yumeji questioned if the ship and Sakurai were connected to the contents of the safe, which irritated Kaizou, so Yumeji apologized and left. Kaizou plotted killing Yumeji as well and was startled when he noticed that his maid was in the room. Misaki apologized for breaking part of the model while dusting it, but he told her to throw it away and left.
Kaizou tracked down Alumi to the local archives. He then threw his car at the building, hoping to kill her; however, her spirits protected her and Morimura Hitoshi. Upon seeing her Over Soul, Kaizou summoned his own[5] and attacked her. As they fought, they demonstrated the various abilities of their respective Over Souls. Kaizou restrained her with his anchor chains, but she responded by aiming her Silver Horn shotgun at him.[4] When Hitoshi pulled out his own gun, planning to arrest Kaizou himself, Kaizou tried to kill the police officer, but Alumi summoned Zenki and Goki to save Hitoshi and then hold down Kaizou's Over Soul. As the fight continued, Alumi's Furyoku ran low, and Kaizou was able to defeat the shikigami pair. After Alumi's Over Souls disappeared, Kaizou attacked her, but the punch was stopped by Asakura Hana's ghost.[6] Kaizou repeatedly attacks Hana but all of them are ineffectual, much to Kaizou's frustration. Alumi then integrated Hana's spirit and replicated Amidamaru's Shinkū Budda-giri, destroying Kaizou's Over Soul.[9] Kaizou was later transported to a hospital.[3]
That night, while Kaizou slept, Kamogawa Yohsuke and Black Maiden visited him in the hospital in order to visit Kaizou's past.[18] Kaizou later awoke confused and in a panic over his safe. Intending to return to his house immediately, he called Misaki and a driver.[13] Upon returning, he saw the open safe and demanded to know who had done it. When the ghosts of Banji and the three thugs confronted him, Kaizou summoned his Over Soul but was interrupted by Misaki's shriek and Chiharu's arrival. Chiharu found and recognized Sakutaro's pistol, but Kaizou denied its past. Alumi suggested that he tell the truth, and as Kaizou turned his anger onto her, Kamogawa Yohsuke activated a YVS Card that forcefully converted Kaizou's life force into Furyoku.
The surge in power transformed Kaizou's Over Soul into a full-scale replica of the Yamato. At the same time, Hana flew in with Sakutaro's corpse and Zero fighter plane.[7] As the plane and ship engaged in battle, the plane intially skirted around the ship's projectiles, but Kaizou eventually destroyed the plane with the ship's main cannon. Alumi saved Hana and brought him Sakutaro's pistol, which Hana then used to create a new Over Soul[19] in the form of a smaller Zero fighter plane. However, once the plane flew up to the bridge, it converted into an armor-type Over Soul and aimed its machine gun at Kaizou. Kaizou was shaken by the memory of his final confrontation with Sakutaro, and, inspired by Hana's transformation, converted his own Over Soul into an armor-type. Firing the souls of vengeful spirits that had been locked in the safe, Hana destroyed Yamato's Over Soul.
As Kaizou fell, he bid farewell to Sakutaro and apologized. Hana caught Kaizou and brought him safely to the ground, remarking that the Over Soul had been destroyed before it could completely consume Kaizou's life.[8] Afterward, Kaizou was taken to a hospital to recuperate.[20][21]
Trivia[]
- Like Sakutaro, Kaizou originally appeared in Hiroyuki Takei's one-shot Death Zero.
- He also bears several similarities to the character of the same name from Takei's other work Karakuri Dôji Ultimo.
