Pino Graham (ピノ・グレアム Pino Gureamu) is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. An Irish druid, he participates in the Shaman Fight as the leader of the Icemen.[4]

Appearance[]

He is a man of average height. He was first seen in a white fur-lined large light blue parka jacket that reaches below his knees and orange goggles hanging from his neck. His street clothes are a black shirt with bold text that says "Ice", dark jeans, and black shoes.

Personality[]

Pino is arrogantly confident and prideful in his own abilities. This stems from his harsh history in which he faced numerous trials and tribulations.[4]

He also displayed stubbornness as shown when he refused to surrender to Team "Funbari Onsen" during their fight even though he, Tona and [[Zria Gagarik]Zria]] were nearly out of Furyoku and that the other two were suggesting that they should already admit defeat.

However, when he and his teammates were finally defeated, he showed no bitterness nor bore any grudge against Team "Funbari Onsen". Instead, he admitted that he was actually happy that he lost to them, specifically to Asakura Yoh and that it was because of the loss that he became elated and more peaceful.

Abilities and Powers[]

Pino is an Irish druid of the ancient Ulster traditions.[4] His father taught him the ancient Celtic techniques of the goddess Damu.[5]

Spirit[]

See More: Badbh

His Guardian Ghost is Badbh, a crow war goddess from Irish mythology. She is able to remove any heat, instantly freezing anything affected sub-zero temperatures. Pino channels her powers through a staff made from mistletoe.[4]

History[]

Past[]

Pino was born on July 30, 1979 in Roscommon, Ireland. When Pino was young he used to study the teachings and techniques of the goddess Danu, under his father. He endured bitter colds during his training and nearly died several times, but he kept on trying over and over again until he became a genuine druid.[5]

Shaman Fight in Tokyo[]

Not much is known about his performance during the preliminary round, but Pino did win two matches and advanced to the main competition. Pino and the other qualifying competitors attended the opening ceremony at Mimata Hall.[6]

Traveling through America[]

A month later, Pino and the other competitors gathered at Yokocha Base and were flown to America in the Patch Jumbo. The shamans were tasked with locating and reaching the Patch Village within three months. While still tens of thousands of feet in the air, the jumbo jet was revealed to be an Over Soul shortly before it was dematerialized, dropping all of its passengers.[7]

Pino successfully reached the village and, with Zria Gagarik and Tona Papik Cadimahide, formed the team Icemen for the tournament.

Shaman Fight Second Round[]

Icemen assault Chocolove

The Icemen freeze Chocolove.

After overhearing Asakura Yoh's boast about beating them in with one hit, the Icemen sought to attack him for the insult but were stopped by Team "The Ren". While introducing themselves, the Icemen demonstrated their Over Souls on Chocolove McDonnell, with Pino freezing the water around Chocolove.[8]

The Icemen's first match was against Team "Funbari Onsen". Pino criticized Yoh for having Amidamaru spy on them and for challenging them with human ghosts. Yoh demonstrated the samurai's transcendence and new double-medium Over Soul, "Spirit of Sword". Initially confused and frightened by this display, Pino was still determined to fight and felt insulted by Yoh quickly dropping the Over Soul.

Yoh defeats Icemen

Yoh defeats the Icemen.

As the match began, the Icemen concentrated their attacks on Johann Faust VIII, who dodged around them until he used his own body to shield Eliza Faust from an attack, despite her being a ghost. Unlike Zria and Tona, Pino was not swayed by Faust's story about reuniting with Eliza; however, they sobered up when Faust summoned his gigantic Over Soul, "Mephisto E".[9] Frightened by the power, Zria and Tona were initially hesitant to attack, so Pino took the lead and attempted to freeze Yoh. Umemiya Ryunosuke leaped in front of the attack, and Pino was shocked and infuriated to see Ryu thaw himself out. The Icemen launched a combination attack, blocking Ryu's sight so that Pino could freeze Ryu and break his neck. However, Ryu broke out of the ice and threw Pino over his shoulder. Ryu then summoned his own gigantic Over Soul, "Yamata no Orochi Go", which further terrified the Icemen.[10] Since both Faust and Ryu refused to fight back, the Icemen focused their attacks on Yoh, but he remained unscathed. Yoh wanted them to attack at full force so he summoned "Spirit of Sword" again. The Icemen agreed to the challenge and poured their strength into one final attack. True to his word, Yoh defeated them with one attack, winning the match for Team "Funbari Onsen".[11]

Afterwards, the Icemen cheerfully hung out with Yoh and his friends. With their part in the tournament finished, the Icemen were planning to leave the next morning on a boat, and Pino dreaded having to tell his father about his failure.[12]

Icemen vs Hao's followers

Bill and Brocken stop the Icemen from leaving.

Before they could leave, they were attacked by Bill Burton and Brocken Meyer, who wanted to collect their souls for Asakura Hao. After Bill trashed the boat, Brocken read out their furyoku amounts, pointing out how low theirs were compared to his and Bill's. Although Usui Horokeu stepped in to assist the Icemen, they were still no match for Bill and The Big Guys, and the Icemen were knocked unconscious.[13] After Usui Lycan and Gororo knocked Bill unconscious, Horohoro borrowed the Icemen's spirits to defeat Brocken.[14]

Shortly after, Lyserg Diethel arrived and carried the Icemen and Horohoro to reunite with Yoh and his friends. There, Faust treated their injuries, but the group was forced to flee when more of Hao's followers attacked the base. The Icemen were flown on Faust's "Mephisto E" back to the inn.[15]

The team later departed the island; however, their journey was interrupted as they appeared inside the Great Spirit along with everyone else to support Yoh, following Asakura Hao's ascension to Shaman King.

Anime/Manga Difference[]

In the 2001 anime series, he and his teammates never made it to the second round. In Episode 44, they chose to give up on the Tournament after fighting Yoh but also decided to remain in America to watch the fights and see if Yoh would become the Shaman King, at the end of the anime series. For an unknown reason, Pino's birthplace was changed to the "North Pole" in the 4Kids version.

The 2001 anime series shows a flashback of a young Pino being chased by village men who intended to offer him as sacrifice to the goddess Badbh. As he runs, he addresses his father and grandfather, asking himself why he has to die, hinting that his family might have had a role in the decision. As he takes refuge in a cave, Badbh shows herself to him in her raven form, stating that it would be an honor for the child to sacrifice himself to her. Pino refuses to give up and states he does not want to die, and that it is all unfair. To defend himself, he manages to free the staff that he later keeps as his own from the ice it was frozen within, a feat that earns Badbh's respect, and she offers to be his guardian ghost.

In a later flashback within the same episode, it is shown that Pino was the one to rescue Zria from the experimentation facility she was confined within in Russia. It is shown that the two later ran into Cadimahide, and all three stuck together.

The 2001 anime series ending depicted the team returning to Ireland together.

Trivia[]

  • In the character popularity polls, Pino ranked #39 in the second.
