The Shaman King (シャーマンキング Shāman Kingu) is the winner of the Shaman Fight, who takes on the Great Spirit as their Guardian Ghost and guides the future of humanity.[4]
Every 500 years, Ragoh and Keito pass by the Earth and herald the approach of a great calamity about to befall humanity. Through the Shaman Fight, a Shaman King is chosen to save the world and change the calamity into a great rebirth.[5] The Patch Tribe have the duty of overseeing and safeguarding the selection.[6]
Abilities and Powers[]
The Shaman King uses their own body as the medium for their Guardian Ghost, the Great Spirit,[7] and possesses the wisdom and power of every soul in the spirit's 5.6 billion-year memory. As such, the Shaman King is considered omniscient and omnipotent.[8] In order to become one with the Great Spirit, the winner of the Shaman Fight must take part in a purification ritual on Mū and enter a temporary coma, during which the winner is vulnerable to attack. However, the Patch Officiants—and any allies the winner might have—stand guard to prevent such an attack.[9]
Shaman Kings are capable of resurrecting people[10] and, by cutting and reconnecting time and space, can restore physical bodies to those who have lost theirs.[11]
Because of their immense power and immortality, the Shaman Kings must settle disputes amongst themselves through proxy wars, like the Flower of Maize,[12] in which mortals fight with their physical bodies at stake.[13]
Despite their phenomenal power, the Shaman Kings are still bound by rules from beings higher than themselves,[14] such as the rules surrounding the Flower of Maize. The Shaman Kings are also prevented from divulging the identities of these higher beings.[15]
History[]
In 500 BC, Mr. B of Gandhara became Shaman King.[16]
In AD 1, Mr. C became Shaman King.[17]
In AD 500, the Shaman King made a volcano erupt, decreasing the world's population by a third.[18]
In AD 1500, Fra YVS became Shaman King and guided humanity towards its modern capitalist society.[12]
In AD 2000, Asakura Hao became Shaman King.[19] Following Hao's ascension, YVS and four others disagreed with Hao's plan for the future of humanity,[12] so a Flower of Maize competition was set for September 9, 2014 on the Earth's moon.[20]
