Teruko Reiheit (ライハイト輝子 Raihaito Teruko), née Amano Teruko (天野輝子), is a fictional character in the Shaman King manga and anime series. She is a professional curse master who, alongside Hans Reiheit, was hired by Oyamada Mansumi to protect him during the assault on Tokyo.[2]
After the Shaman Fight, Teruko married Hans and joined the X-Laws in their charity work[3] and their later worldwide search for Marco Lasso.[4] For the Flower of Maize, she participates as a member of Team Marcos.[5]

She has light gray hair and wears a headband with a pair of lit tapers. She also wears white robes and always carries straw dolls, nails, and stakes.
After marrying Hans, she wears more casual clothes.

Her Guardian Ghost is The Loafers, the ghost of a high school girl whom Teruko accidentally killed.[6] For her curse, Teruko places a hair from the target into a straw doll and then drives a nail through the doll with a wooden hammer. Her ritual must, however, not be seen by anyone else than her, or it will have no effect.[2] If successfully executed, The Loafers will use her weight to bear down on the target. Unbeknownst to Teruko, The Loafers has been instead making the victims lose consciousness because of the spirit's dislike of violence.[6] After falling in love with Hans and giving up curses, Teruko uses her technique to impart Loafers' love to a target and to befriend them.[4]
Ahead of the Flower of Maize, Teruko learns to perform New Trance with the archangel Gabriel.[5]

Past[]
Teruko committed multiple suicide attempts for her miseries of continuous losing loves. These experiences ironically enhanced her spiritual powers and awoke her as a shaman. At some point in the past, a high-school girl nicknamed The Loafers was fatally involved in Teruko's suicide attempt and was killed instead. However, Loafers did not hold a grudge against Teruko, but worried about her and became her Guardian Ghost.[6]
Invading the Plants[]
When a fleet of ships attacked the island Tokyo where the Shaman Fights were being held, Teruko was with Hans Reiheit, hired by Oyamada Mansumi and told that if the ship that all three were on survived they would each receive ¥1 billion as payment.
After Asakura Hao targeted the ship during the battle, Hans took his aim at Hao and fired his archangel Azazel. Hao simply crushed the Over Soul and Hans was killed by the strain. Teruko, having survived the attack together with the ship, prepared her straw doll and while lamenting the restrictions of her curse, decided to kill Hao first. However, she was killed by Hao who had reflected her curse back at her.[2]
Teruko awoke on the beach next to Hans and dressed only in his coat. He told her that he had removed her soaked clothes to let them dry and explained that everyone who had been killed during the attack had been revived and was now going home. After expressing her concerns about the money and crying that she could never marry now that someone had seen her naked against her will, Hans suddenly proposed to her. When she yelled that he was making fun of her, Hans only asked if he was not good enough.[7] She later leaned happily against his chest on the beach.[8]
During the final battle against Hao, Teruko and Hans appeared alongside the train in the King's Commune. She clung to Hans as he fired Iron Maiden Jeanne from Azazel's cannon.[9]
Day After Maize[]
Teruko and Hans eventually married, and after seeing how happily in love the couple was, The Loafers moved on to the afterlife in peace.[6] Teruko and Hans joined the other X-Laws in visiting war-torn areas and providing aid.[10]
Teruko and Hans, along with the other members of the X-Laws (sans Marco), attended the wedding of Jeanne and Ren.[3]
After returning to Japan, Teruko retired from being a professional Ushi no Koku Mai-er and took on multiple part-time jobs to provide for herself and Hans, who continued to travel for work.[3]
Marcos[]
After a brief visit from Hans on his way from China to Mexico,[3] Teruko received a call from Lyserg, who asked her to follow after Hans. Sensing Teruko's seriousness, The Loafers returned to help her. They traveled to Mexico, and Teruko successfully pacified and befriended Santa Muerte, saving Hans from the spirit's wrath.[4]
Anime/Manga Difference[]
Teruko does not appear in the 2001 anime series.
Trivia[]
- Teruko's ability is based on the curse ritual called "ushi no koku mairi" (丑の刻参り English: "ox-hour shrine-visit"). It must be performed on a Shinto shrine's grounds during the Ox Hour (between 1:00 and 3:00 AM), wearing a white kimono and a trivet with burning tapers on one's head, and driving a 15 cm nail into a straw doll containing a small piece of the victim's body, while holding it against the shrine's sacred tree. The ritual must be performed night after night, and if anyone witnesses it the curse will rebound against the caster.
- Her name contains the kanji for "sky" (天 ama), "fields" (野 no), "shine" (輝 teru), and the feminizing suffix 子 (-ko).
