Tokagero (トカゲロウ Tokagerō) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Shaman King, and is the guardian ghost of Umemiya Ryunosuke, nicknamed "Wooden Sword" Ryu.

He is voiced by Wataru Takagi in Japanese, and Wayne Grayson in English.

About

Tokagerō is a 600 year old spirit from the same time as Amidamaru. He was a thief who was eventually killed by Amidamaru and because he wanted revenge wasn't able to pass on. Because of his hatred he eventually turned his skin lizard green. During his life time he became infamous and even gained his own fighting style called 'Tokage Kenp'ō (Lizard Fist Art).[1] He always calls himself a nasty villain but is in reality a big softie who only misses the comfort of a mother's care.

History

Past

He was born on November 14, 1374. When he was alive, Tokagerō was a thief that was born into poverty. Tokagerō was forced to eat his own dead mother to survive. He then became a thief ambushing people. An ancient bandit, he stole everything, money, food, lives and even more. He led a horde of bandits who terrorized the area 600 years ago.

There was a hill Tokagerō and his group used as a hideout, but one day Amidamaru passed by and was ambushed by them. However, being the strongest one, Amidamaru killed Tokagerō and his group.

Present Time

In the modern age Tokagerō attacks Asakura Yoh and his friends in order to get revenge on Amidamaru, who does not recall him at all. Through Kyōyama Anna's research, they learn that he is an obscure historical figure who was killed by Amidamaru. Tokagerō possesses Umemiya Ryunosuke and uses him to steal Harusame from the museum and attack Yoh and Amidamaru. The fight that ensues forces Yoh and Amidamaru to break Harusame in order to save Ryu's life.

Yoh appeals to Tokagerō and allows him to possess him instead of Ryu, who is just an innocent bystander, because Yoh believes that Tokagerō is not as evil as he claims. Togakerō does so, with the supposed intention of killing him in the process, but finds from great sadness he does not have the heart to do so and leaves Yoh's body peacefully.

Shaman Fights

It was then Tokagerō prepared to move on, but for some reason he still could not enter nirvana and eventually decided to become the spirit ally of Ryu. It was during this time that Ryu wanted to train with Yohmei Asakura who had trained Yoh when he was young. But he declined, saying that the Shaman Tournament was too dangerous for an unskilled man like Ryu. However after agreeing in the mountains of Izumo, Ryu became stronger and Tokageroōembodied the spirit of the mythical river god called "Yamata no Orochi".

Later, after training with Anna under the Shaman Tournament, Tokagero evolves into a Seirei (Holy)-class spirit and gains a complete new form as the Yamata no Orochi.

Funbari no Uta

He is seen drinking with Amidamaru in Yasu's cart saying Hana just has a little father complex but just born in the wrong era and just let him fight now and then.

Over Souls and Attacks

O.S. Tokagerō-Bokutō

'O.S. "Tokager'ō-Bokutō" (O.S. 木刀にトカゲロウ, katana ni tokager'''''ō/Wooden Sword in Tokager'''''ō)

Tokagero Bokuto

O.S. "Tokagero-Bokutō

  • Shaman: Umemiya Ryunosuke
  • O.S. Type: Weapon Type
  • Spirit Ally: Tokagerō (human ghost)
  • Medium used: Bokutō, carved from normal wood

Description: This is Ryu's first Over Soul, made by integrating Tokagerō's ghost with his bokutō. This O.S. provides Ryu with much needed protection in the form of shoulder armor and prehensile, snake-like tendrils that are used to bind enemies as well as defend against attacks. Originally, this O.S. manifested as armor, turning Tokagerō into a shield bearing his likeness, before being re-imagined. Overall, this O.S. proved to be Ryu's most versatile O.S. type, if not the weakest. Ryu even created a 'legendary hitch-hiking' technique revolving around this O.S. called his "Big Thumb Over Soul" creating a huge 'green thumb' with a striking resemblance to Tokagerō's face.

Attacks

  • Hell Dragon Crimson Lizard: A simple, yet powerful downwards slash with the Over Soul cutting something in half. Known as Dewlap Attack in the English anime.
  • Hell Dragon Scarlet Lizard: A cross slash with Over Soul that cuts up an opponent.
  • Ame no Mura Kumo[2](雨の村雲 Gathering Clouds of Rain): By manifesting the river spirit into Tokagerō, Tokagerō grows long snakes out of his hair and will eventually use this for an attack. It creates a large white spirit ball around the Bokutō and sprouts the heads of the Yamata No Orochi that can then crush any opponent with a spear like thrust attack of its head.[3]

Yamata No Orochi

O.S. "Yamata No Orochi Go"

  • Shaman: Umemiya Ryunosuke
  • O.S. Type: Spirit Type
  • Spirit Ally: Tokagerō (Seirei-class)
  • Medium used: "Ame-no-Murakumo" bokutō, carved from shin-boku--holy wood

Description: The result of Anna's training. Thanks to her training, Ryu learned to harness, at will, the power he displayed during his fight with Boris Tepes Dracula, the vampire shaman. Orochi provides all the advantages of the previous form, but in the form of an Eight-headed serpent, yielding far greater ferocity and power. Once a Seirei-class spirit, this evolved O.S. transforms Tokagero into the fearsome “Yamata-no-Orochi Gō”, a gigantic O.S. which places Tokagerō as the rider of a humongous, 3-wheeled motorcycle monstrosity with eight humongous serpents heads, looming over an over sized replica of Tokagerō's headguard. This O.S. variation, aside from its naturally high defenses, is surprisingly mobile.

Attacks

  • Super Attack (Chariot Attack): This attack involves using the the multiple heads of the O.S. to grab and crush any object.[4]

O.S. Sushi Knife Susanoo

O.S

O.S. "Sashimi Bouchou Susanorō"

O.S. "Sashimi Bouchou Susanoo" (O.S. 刺身包丁スサノロウ, Sashimi Carving Knife Susanoo)[5]

  • Shaman: Umemiya Ryunosuke
  • O.S. Type: Armor Type
  • Spirit Ally: Tokagerō (Seirei-class)
  • Medium used: "Ame-no-Murakumo" bokutō, carved from shin-boku--god wood

Description: In order to compete against Team "The Ren", Team "Funbari Onsen" began training to hone their shamanic powers, and Ryu developed this Over Soul as a result. It's an Armor-type O.S. made from integrating Tokagero's ghost with Ryu's Ame-no-Murakumo bokutō. The O.S. takes the form of a giant sushi knife with Tokagerō's signature headguard visible over the hilt that has a golden dragon insignia on it. It forms shoulder armor created over Ryu's right arm, two armor rings on his left arm, and a purple skirt armor on his right leg.

This O.S. embodies Ryu's dream of becoming a sushi chef, which makes this O.S. all the more powerful. He was supposed to show this O.S. of in the fight against Team "The Ren" however Horohoro quickly shattered his hands and made it impossible for him to fight. Instead it was first revealed in the first Plant of the Dessert where he fought against Namari and his animal spirit Red Rope. Susanoo comes from the name of the hero who slayed the "Yamata no Orochi".

Attacks

  • Urutora/Ultra Sabaki (ーウルトラ 捌き, Ultra Knifework): A cutting technique where he slashes his opponent in half vertically then proceeds to slash them several times horizontally all in the blink of an eye, like it was sushi he was cutting.[6] Sabaki also refers to a fighting style called Tai Sabaki that using all of the body movements referring to the way Ryu uses all of his skills when fighting, combining his street fighting style with his Shamanic abilities.
